Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

I’ve seen this tag floating around BookTube (created by TheBookArcher) and seeing as I currently do not have a YouTube channel I thought I would bring it over to my blog because I actually really love the questions.

Small disclaimer: These are my opinions. I am sure there are things I really love and enjoy that you do not. I don’t think less of anyone who actually loves something that I do not, or someone who hates something I really love. It is what makes the world go round. On that note, if you are easily offended….maybe skip this entry.

1) A popular book or series that you didn’t like:

This has a huge fandom, and I am going to probably piss them off right off the bat, but The Mortal Instruments series is one of the absolute worst that I have tried to read, and believe me I truly tried. I read the first three I think. Or the first two? Doesn’t matter, its not a good series. I have mentioned this in an earlier entry about how the blatant plagiarism is basically what turned me off. The writing isn’t great. but that author does NOT have a good reputation. Google it because my rant about her will take over this entire entry. Cassandra Clare is her name…and ripping off is her game.

2) A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love:

Okay this was actually difficult to answer, so I went onto my goodreads account and looked at the books I have rated and put them in order of average rating. The ones that surprised me were the books by Jo Nesbø, The Harry Hole (I am certain this is totally pronounced differently in Norwegian because honestly…I giggle at it when I read it in English) Series, is really good in my opinion. The first book, The Bat is a little slow, but the series picks up. Their ratings aren’t completely low, but I expected them to be higher than they actually are. I am yet to finish the entire series but I will get there.

3) A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn people for spoilers) OR an OTP that you don’t like:

I actually don’t really have a good answer for this. I am currently catching up with The Throne of Glass series, and if rumors are true, I don’t like who people seem to favor for Celaena. Also, I never agreed with who Katniss ended up with in the Hunger Games.

4. A popular book genre that you hardly reach for:

Let’s see, I think maybe Sci-Fi. I read a lot of fantasy and historical fiction, some with sprinkles of Sci-Fi elements but Its been a while since I really read a full Sci-Fi genre book. Recommend some if you can. I like to branch out.

5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like:

Here we go…Lara Jean from “To All the Boys I Loved Before” I actually really enjoyed the story, but she’s an idiot. I felt like throwing a book at her the entire time. I loved her little sister though, and I am almost hoping the author decides to do a spin off with her. Cuz Lara Jean was just a whiney “oh poor me” character.

6. A popular author that you can’t seem to get into:

John Green…hands down. But I have written about this enough. Another one would be Ernest Cline who wrote “Ready Player One” because I was thoroughly disappointed by that book. Also obviously Cassandra Clare…giant HELL NO on that one.

7.  A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (examples “lost princess”, corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.)

Love triangles!! This shit doesn’t happen as often in real life, if at all!! I am so tired of that. Also the perfect looking female who thinks she’s not pretty but suddenly all the hot guys in the story are dying to be with her. COME ON….STOP THAT SHIT. Stop it right now!!

8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

The Vampire Academy…I tried. The Selection Series…sounds like the Bachelor in book form. No thank you. Fifty Shades of Grey because it is awful.

9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

I actually didn’t mind the Divergent movie, but the book was torture. I never continued the series. Pretty Little Liars, I was hooked to the show, and I once tried to read the books and I couldn’t read it. But lately I also dislike the show, even with that half assed “bomb” they dropped.

So yea, these are my opinions. Don’t hate me for them. and if you’d like please answer these questions yourself and link it below in the comments!! 😀

Wholeheartedly agree with points 7 and 8. As for The Mortal Instruments, seeing this reputation around Clare—how she plagiarised, attacked/bullied people—has put me right off any of her books. I tried reading the first book; was okay, and maybe I could retry by telling myself she isn’t the author, but then why should I read something that I should not, in the end, almost feeling as if I’d be enabling her, if that makes sense. Writing about it now and being reminded of what she’s done is angering me now, and questions how she was published at all. Phew, sorry, rambled a bit, but insightful post.

    • I actually remember now that I read the first one in the series which also I picked it up for the first time in 2010, didn’t even get a quarter of the way through. Then decided to try again, I finished the first one, got less than half way into the second and then just asked a friend about how it ends. haha I couldn’t finish it, and the more I learned about the author the less interested I became. I also have no idea how she got published and how the fandom got so big. To each their own I guess.

Yep. Truly amazing. I suppose what irks me the most is aspiring writers trying to make it out there, and she gets picked up even though she allegedly plagiarised—it sounds legit to me—so that baffles me further. I found out the ending too, and to be honest, I’m glad to have not read the books.

  2. Oh God I hate The Mortal Instruments series too. And I TRIED because (hey answer to number nine) I really enjoyed the movie. I think I read three of the books, maybe even four before I gave up in disgust.

Also: I hate that Ron and Hermoine end up married. NO WAY. She would end up with someone way smart and suave. Hermoine and Ron make no sense to me as a forever couple. I can buy that they might have tried dated in high school, but not married, no way no how. Haha.

    • This is why I actually like this book tag idea. We all have different opinions. I love Ron with Hermione. They were friends first, and thats one of the best bases for a strong relationship. They’re different which would help them grow together and learn different things. Couples who have absolutely everything in common don’t always work because people will tend to get bored. In my opinion, they balance each other out, and you want that in a relationship. I just always wanted Neville with Luna lol

  3. And as for Prisoner of Azkaban, while all of the Harry Potter books are better than the films in my opinion, Prisoner of Azkaban is far and away my favourite of the films I adore it! Yay for doing the tag!
